The African elephant is the largest land animal on earth.  They live in herds of 10-50 animals.  The bull elephant enforces the social structure in the herd and prevents the young from forming gangs and from harassing other animals or people.  This provides a clear chain of authority that gives each member of the herd a safe and secure niche.
