HOW? BY BUILDING GOOD CHARACTER A Community of Character’s goal is to make everyone aware of the benefits of good character, train in specific qualities, and honor good examples. The initiative can encompass individuals, homes, schools, churches, businesses, governments, law enforcement, and organizations. As more people become involved, character is reinforced throughout the community, and everyone’s efforts are strengthened.
In July, 2001, interested citizens of Richmond, Missouri, approached the mayor and city council about the importance of character for our city to succeed. The council unanimously approved a resolution designating Richmond as a Character City, pledging commitment to a city wide initiative to encourage good character across our community. Thus, we became one of a growing number cities, states, and entire countries to be associated with the International Association of Character Cities, which builds networks between groups. A character council to direct this initiative has been formed with representatives from various segments of the community, others are also invited to be involved in both planning and development of Richmond’s Character initiative.
